Protect Your Baby Infant from the Sun

Posted by

If your baby is under 6 months old, doctors advise against using sunscreen. So how best to protect your baby? Use umbrellas and sun protection clothing.  Remember one bad sunburn can raise the risk of deadly melanoma later in life and a baby's skin is thinner and more vulnerable.

There are cute sun protection suits for girls and boys.

There are baby sunsuits that offer maximum protection in material designed to keep your baby from overheating.

Wide brim hats are vital to protect baby's tender scalp. Those with flaps protect the neck and those with chin straps and sizing adjustment can be worn for months or years.

Your infant's eyes need protection, too. Today you can even find polarized sunglasses to protect your baby's precious eyes.

Keep your baby in the shade as much as possible and remember the sun is strongest between 10 and 4. If you are going to use sunscreen on your baby, there are some all natural brands that are safe for your infant. The Badger brand receives high marks from the Environmental Working Group and they have baby sunscreens and face sticks.

Make sure your baby is protected at day care, too. Make sure they understand how you want your infant protected from the sun. Day care agencies may follow specific precautions before taking babies outside, although most will keep young babies indoors. Provide sunscreen and appropriate clothing for your baby's caregivers to use.
And keep sunscreen, a hat, a sunsuit and sunglasses in your diaper bag.
