Which East Coast beaches are the best family beaches? It depends on what you look for in a beach vacation. Maybe you want to visit a beach near a popular city or attraction - or maybe you want the opposite, a beach off the beaten path where you and your family can enjoy a nice, quiet afternoon by the water. Whatever you're after in a stretch of sand, this list of the best family beaches on the East Coast should have you covered. Just remember: dont leave home without stocking up on sun protection supplies!
1. York Beach, Maine
The town of York Beach is truly a quintessential
beach town, with enough beaches and attractions to hold the attention of every person in your family. Short Sand Beach has a ton
of classic boardwalk amenities like arcade, mini-golf, and bowling. After a day
of carnival-like fun, take a short drive north to Ogunquit. Here you can take a
leisurely stroll along Marginal Way; a quiet, oceanfront path that offers
sweeping views of the Atlantic.
2. Edisto Island, South Carolina
If your family leans more towards the outdoors than resorts, Edisto Beach State Park is a great place to vacation. Cabins or campsites are available in the pristine 1,255-acre park, where you'll find marshland, tidal rivers, a 1.5-mile stretch of beachfront, and a flourishing maritime forest that boasts a 3.5-mile running trail.
3. Tampa Bay, Florida
Clearwater Beach is one of the most popular family vacation destinations on the East Coast and for good reason. Attentive lifeguards, plentiful amenities, and beautiful white sand beaches allow for a relaxing vacation for the entire family. If you're planning a May visit, try to plan it around the Clearwater Fun'n Sun Festival, and be sure to brush up on your sand sculpture skills so you can participate in the annual sandcastle building contest!
4. Bethany Beach, Delaware
Unlike busier beaches in Delaware, Bethany Beach is known for its peaceful atmosphere. This small resort town has plenty of quiet beaches, charming boutiques, and delicious seafood restaurants. In addition to swimming, Bethany Beach offers kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, and sailing. Its perfect for the family that wants to get away from the more touristy vacation options the East Coast has to offer.
5. Emerald Isle, North Carolina
Emerald Isle is located in the southern part of North Carolina's perennial vacation destination, the Outer Banks. A beautiful stretch of sand with calm waters, it's perfect for swimming. Dolphins are plentiful here - think about renting a boat so you and your family can make the most of your dolphin-watching adventure.
