Spring Break in the Time of Coronavirus

Posted by

While many of us have already put the deposit down for our Spring Break trips to warm beaches, favorite theme parks, mountain retreats, or European cities, the world is in the midst of widespread mitigation measures for the Coronavirus. The United States is in the early stages of addressing, testing and mitigating for COVID-19 and parents are wondering if it is safe to travel. Many college students are on Spring Break now, but most high schools and elementary schools won’t have Spring Break for a few more weeks. Some families are cancelling trips but Vice President Mike Pence tells us in early March that it is safe for healthy Americans to travel, noting “one of our favorite places to go when my children were young and even before my children came was in Orlando.” “Whether it be Disney World, whether it be other destination, whether it be cruise ships … those most at risk are seniors with serious or chronic underlying health conditions.”

Spring Break trip preparations for your time in the sun typically include sunscreen, UV protective clothing  swim diapers, and flotation swimsuits. This year you will also have to consider hand sanitizer, tissues and disinfectant wipes. As Spring Break draws nearer, US citizens will have a better idea of the impact of CPVID-19 on their plans. The WHO website, and the CDC website provide up to date information, as do many newspapers.  CDC also provides prevention measures such as washing your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throwing it away, keeping your hands off your face, disinfecting surfaces, maintaining “social distance” of 3 feet from anyone who may be infected and staying away from the elderly if you think you may be infected.

Even if it becomes necessary to limit contact at large theme parks, on planes, on cruises or at festivals, vacations close to home such as a family beach trip, bike trip or kayak adventure can still get you out of the house and out in the sun to spend time with the ones you love. And isn’t that what it’s really all about?
