Keep Your Child Safe from the Sun This Summer
June is here, which means kids everywhere are getting ready to rejoice after the final school bell rings before summer. And while this summer is sure to be filled with endless afternoons and long days of fun at the beach, summer also brings with it something not so fun - an increased risk of skin damage from the sun. That's why we wanted to talk about why sun protection is so important for your kids and some easy ways to help keep them safe.
Sun Damage - No Laughing Matter
While we believe that playing outside is vital for children's growth and development, without sun protection, it can come with some serious risks. It only takes one severe sunburn to potentially double a child's chances of getting melanoma later in life, and damage from UV rays can lead to wrinkles and deterioration of the skin later on. Make no mistake, any kind of sun damage is serious - there is no such thing as a healthy tan.
Keeping Your Kids Safe
Thankfully, there's a lot that can be done to protect your children from sun damage. Sunblock is a good solution and should be used anytime kids play outside. Be sure to apply to any exposed area, and teach your child the BEENS acronym to remember oft-neglected spots - back of the knees, ears, eye area, neck, and scalp. Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside and every 2 hours thereafter.
Another great solution, and one that's a bit more permanent, is sun protective clothing. Whether it’s a full sunsuit, a rash guard shirt, or an infant one piece, sun protective clothing is a great option for any location.
