Heavy Hearts

Posted by

Here at Solartex our hearts are heavy after the Paris attacks, as well as the terrorist attacks in Beirut, Lebanon and the Russian plane crash. We are in mourning for the many lives lost in these senseless terrorist attacks. As we all know, the point of terrorism is to terrify and those of us who lived thru 9-11 understand and empathize with the terror that those in Paris and elsewhere are experiencing now.

One of the most disturbing things about the Paris shootings was that the terrorists targeted young people. As parents, our greatest responsibility is keeping our children safe, and our greatest fear is that they will be harmed. This is true even after they become young adults.

I recall after 9-11 everyone reminding us to live our lives or the terrorists would win. That is easy to say, but with young children at home the fear was magnified. I didn’t want them out of my sight. All of the parents I knew were anxious and we wanted to spend as much time with our children as we could, holding them close and keeping them safe. Soon after 9-11 I took my family on a beach trip to a place we felt safe. Some of the fear and anxiety did melt away. It provided a chance to connect with my children and help ease some their fears without all of the televised distractions. The ocean and sun were healing, and for a few moments anyway, we felt safe.

Not everyone can pick up and go away; between school, the demands of the holidays and the Christmas season and the expense, it can be difficult. But this time of year you can find many deals at some of the best East Coast beaches, like the Outer Banks, Ocean City,MD; Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach, Emerald Island, Tybee Island and Jacksonville. So if a beach trip is a possibility, I strongly urge you to do it. You and your children will never regret the solitude of a fall or winter trip to the shore and the healing time you spend together.
